Hi, I’m Joann Chang. I started singing when I was 6 years old because my mom wanted me to sing Mandarin Duet Pop songs with her on those old karaoke boxes. (Yes, those actually existed!!) And even though I didn’t know what I was doing, she always praised me, telling me I could sing so well.
I didn’t believe my mom’s praise until high school when I was accepted into an elite choir and took my singing to the next level! Since then, I’ve taken opera/classical and pop vocal lessons, joined a worship band and jazz band, sang solos in a gospel choir, and even released an album of my original songs.
I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without the coaching, encouragement, and help from people who believed in me. They saw my potential, spoke life to me, and helped me believe in myself.

Believe it or not, I was super shy when I was a kid. My mom had mental illness so we always made sure she was ok. That meant, me not speaking up and having my “Own Voice.” Singing helped me find confidence and unlock my authentic voice ie. express my needs and feelings to others without fear and anxiety.
When I first started singing, I wasn’t sure if I was singing totally correctly or liked the way I sounded. I wasn’t sure how to support my air, project my sound, and sing higher notes. I definitely didn’t know I could even mix my lower notes with my head voice. I just sang in my head voice most of the time due to my strong classical training. But I realized later, I wasn’t accessing my full vocal range or potential. Neither was I singing from my heart. I was just singing to sound like others.
After discovering jazz, I learned to really find my own style and explore my full voice. Now I help singers like you who went through similar challenges as me through my online and live group coaching calls.
