Do you often crack between registers? Every person has a break between their registers. If you haven’t already, please read my blog on Mixed Voice . Usually students experiencing cracking because they are approaching their breaking point. For female singers it is usually a G4 or B6. For males it is usually around E4 to F#4. In vocal terminology, the transition between registers is called, “Passaggio. A Vocal Coach is best to help you bridge your passaggio smoothly without cracking, pulling, or flipping. Here are some Vocal Tips:
- Do Sirens from your highest notes to your lowest note. Then limit the range to just highest note to right below the notes where you crack. Slide up and down those notes back and forth to smooth at the breaking point keeping consistent airflow moving forward.
- Do slides in intervals of either 3rds or 5ths. So slide through each notes going up and down smoothly several times.
- If you’re still flipping or cracking easily, go slower while applying the same exercises in #1-3. This will take some time and getting use to.
- Make sure you’re not pushing or using your throat but activating your diaphragm muscles. You should either feel a tiny contraction when you sing each note or your abdominal muscles pushing out. Don’t let go of your diaphragm support muscles when you slide down. Keep it support because they will help you produce the sound/pitch without strain. Remember the power source is your core not your throat.
If you’re not sure if you’re doing this correctly and still experiencing strain, please book a 1 on 1 lesson with me, fill out the vocal assessment form, or shoot me an email at: lessonswithmschang@gmail.com. I specialize in helping people belt and find their mixed voice.
